This week, the Daily Mail reported that Drinking three cups of tea a day ‘slashes breast cancer risk’ for the over 50s. Personally, I love news like this and last year the Times even bucked the trend to highlight how many things are surprisingly good for you. I especially like to hear that red wine is good for me, but I have grown to learn that for every report telling me of the benefits, you can always find one to counter it.
All of this has seemed pretty light-hearted in the past, but if we read the comments below the Mail piece, we can see that this is beginning to have a serious impact on the credibility of such studies. I am not criticising how the research is conducted or reported, but if they set out to answer different questions, they are most likely to end with different results. This is continuing to create confusion amongst the public and unless more is done to highlight how the studies differ, I think there is a serious danger that we will all simply end up ignoring future research – which will be detrimental to us all.
